The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a one-time, $40,000 grant to Hamilton College, in collaboration with the College of Wooster, to support the second Institute for Liberal Arts Digital Scholarship (ILiADS.org) conference, which will be held at Hamilton College on July 24-29, 2016. ILiADs, originally conceived by the Digital Humanities institute (DHi) at Hamilton College and the College of Wooster, grew to a collaboration of over 23 liberal arts colleges at the first conference in July 2015. This year’s program, developed by the ILiADS 2016 Steering Committee, will gather digital scholars, librarians, technologists, and students in an environment offering rich opportunities for institutional teams to focus on digital scholarship projects. ILiADS’ mission is to foster both innovation and sustainability in digital liberal arts projects.
Feedback from last summer’s ILiADS attendees was uniformly positive and enthusiastic. Participants felt the Institute served a unique need for Digital Humanities practitioners at liberal arts colleges, bringing together valuable communities of practice in an environment that propelled digital projects forward and inspired new endeavors. What participants valued most highly from the 2015 conference was the week-long period of focused work during which institutional teams had undisturbed time to direct their collective attention to their digital projects and draw upon the additional expertise of the ILiADS organizers and staff. In 2016, we will incorporate two levels of professional support available to ILiADS participants: team coaches and ILiADS experts. Our coaches are talented faculty, librarians, and technologists from liberal arts colleges, each bringing excellent project management and digital project skills to guide their teams. These coaches also serve as liaisons between the teams and the ILiADS experts, a cohort of highly accomplished professionals with deep expertise in particular aspects of digital scholarship, ranging from interface design to metadata, GIS, or text encoding. Experts have been selected based upon the particular needs of this year’s project teams and come from all sectors of higher education, including Yale University, University of Victoria, the University of South Carolina system, Michigan State University, and MITH (U. of Maryland), as well as liberal arts colleges.
While our focus remains on liberal arts colleges, ILiADS is fully committed to our role as a bridge between that sector and the larger Digital Humanities community and in shaping the broader conversations around digital scholarship and pedagogy. Our coaches, experts, and participants are all eligible to participate in the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) training network, our coaches and experts are firmly established in national and international Digital Humanities communities, and ILiADS is heavily cross pollinating with research universities both in our experts and in our teams (e.g., this year, teams from Dartmouth, Pittsburgh, Penn State, and Notre Dame will attend ILiADS). Since last summer’s conference, ILiADS has been highlighted at a number of important DH events: DHSI, the Bucknell Digital Scholarship Conference, MLA’s annual conference, and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI).
In the summer of 2015, a partnership of 23 liberal arts institutions hosted ILiADS, the Institute for Liberal Arts Digital Scholarship, at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. IliADS is project-based and team-based; it offers an opportunity for focused support of a digital project – your project – as you work alongside other colleagues and experts. Furthermore, ILiADS gives institute participants an opportunity to explore questions around digital scholarship along the way. You know that feeling at the end of a conference, when you’re tired but energized? ILiADS will give you something to do with that energy! The team-based project approach of ILiADS was deemed a success by 2015 participants. They described ILiADS as an opportunity to “focus as a project team” in the planning and development of digital teaching and/or research projects in a setting that “fills a gap in our current professional development milieu.”
ILiADS offers participants a summer institute where they may develop projects as a team (faculty, student, librarian, technologist, other experts) and also interact with method and technology experts who can further their project goals. Unique to ILiADS and recognizing the role digital scholarship plays in undergraduate education, priority will be given to proposals that include student collaborators. Project proposals at any stage, idea through to implementation, are welcome. Our ILiADS Coaches will guide project teams from the point at which their proposal is accepted to the end of the institute week. During the summer institute week, teams will spend significant time working on their projects and coaches will connect teams to experts in the digital methods and the technologies necessary for the teams to develop their project goals, process, and outcomes.
At ILiADS, ideas grow through collaborative, iterative processes. During this week of digital immersion, teams composed of some mix of researchers, librarians, technologists, and students are invited to build upon established digital pedagogy or scholarship projects and/or launch new ones. Whether you’re learning how to clear significant hurdles or you’re just getting off of the ground, ILiADS’ Experts will consult with teams to advance their goals. Over the course of the week, team members will learn more about their own collaboration and how to sustain their project into the future. Projects of all types, and at any juncture, are welcomed. Submit your project proposal by February 22, 2016. Upon acceptance, an ILiADS Coach will be in touch to discuss the project ideas, expertise needs, and to answer questions on how to build a strong team.
We have reached out to a group of vetted experts, but we are also open to bringing in other experts based on compelling needs of projects.
